About

Hey, glad to have you here. I'm D.W. Stein, an indie fantasy and science fiction author. I love creating weird worlds, flawed characters, big adventures, and the occasional magical disaster.

If you're wondering where to start, it depends on what you enjoy. Whether you're looking for funny fantasy, character-driven space opera, or a fast standalone sci-fi thriller, there's a story for you below.

If you like funny fantasy

If Terry Pratchett-style comic fantasy is your thing, you might get along with my Tark series. Tark is a third-rate wizard, and in the first book he works at Wizmart, an enchanted convenience store. From book two onwards, the series moves to the magical Academy, where he somehow ends up with far more responsibility than he's equipped to handle. It's a completed seven-book series. They're full of magical nonsense, but also friendship, found family, and some more emotional moments than you might expect.

If you like character-driven space opera

If Firefly or Mass Effect are your kind of science fiction, you might like my Ashes of the Waterfall series. It's an ongoing, multi-viewpoint space opera that begins in Llynfall, a settlement built around an enormous waterfall. The story follows Aimee, an engineer searching for her missing brother, and Blair, a jaded military officer who has mostly given up on himself. What begins with a stolen data pad soon grows into enemy fleets, political trouble, and ancient alien technology.

If you want a fast standalone sci-fi thriller

If The Murderbot Diaries or Galaxy's Edge are more your thing, there's Breach Point, my standalone sci-fi thriller. Rider James is a Breacher—a specialist in blowing holes in starships and making impossible exits—but when the story begins, he's stuck in prison. Naval Intelligence offers him a pardon in exchange for one last job: extract a kidnapped scientist from a criminal stronghold and disappear. Rider knows it's probably a suicide mission, but it might be his only chance to see his daughter again.

Whatever you decide to try, thanks for stopping by. You can find everything on the books page or see what I'm currently working on over on the blog.
